With meteoric rise of smartphones and Android platform, developers are flocking to the platform for creating apps and games alike. Frogmind has undertook such an endeavor to create (port from IOS) its marquee game, “Badland” for Android. While puzzle games, 2D platformers are dime a dozen on Android, Badland brings a new artistic style and physics based game play. However, these games are never released for PC users even if there is interest as the technologies widely differs. Bluestacks however is an Android emulator that lets you run all apps and games available from Google PlayStore and thus you can enjoy Badland for PC.
The Game Itself
The game features a bird like creature that can fly up and down along with horizontal movement and the player is required to navigate through the various available levels (80 up till now). The levels are carefully crafted with parallax movement, giving a sensation of depth to an otherwise 2D game. The foes are mostly the environment itself and thus the game is a survival game. There are no tutorials however available and hence you have to proceed based on a hit and trial basis. As levels progress, they become more challenging where you are required to control a swarm of these through various hurdles, each moving independently. The levels are not repetitive and require attention to complete. The artwork involves dark ink based figures on the foreground with vivid scenery in the back adding to the contrast.

Controls are very simple, tapping the screen simply moves the birds forward and up and longer the tap, longer they move forward. First few levels help you to get used to the unique physics based system followed in the game. The levels get progressively difficult. There are hazards like spinning gears that kill instantly and smaller artifacts that attach to the birds making their flight difficult. There are numerous power ups that can speed up, slow down, and make them heavy or fluffy throughout the game. The game draws comparison from Limbo, another critically claimed game. The artwork and sound effects create an immersive environment. The characters are not just silhouettes but also show emotion as they near danger by “fear” and “anxiety”.
